Surgery in the Center, Basel
Practice planning and implementation
Year
2023
Area
220 m²
Description:
Right in the center of Basel, we planned and built a practice for general and visceral surgery on an area of 220 m². The practice is located in a listed building from the 1950s right on the market square. Our goal was to design rooms for this practice that give patients a feeling of well-being. That was also the client's wish. This practice also includes 1 practice operating room.
Special feature: The style of the interior design is characterized on the one hand by the existing ceiling, which has an industrial character, and a furniture design concept with classics from Vitra from the 1950s. The waiting area in particular, where patients stay before their examination, conveys a very pleasant and calm atmosphere. In terms of materials, we also opted for wallpaper from the company and a carpet from Jab Anstoetz to create a living room feel.
Another special feature is the construction of the ceiling, where we used baffles made of recycled PET, which emphasizes the supporting structure.
The well thought-out lighting concept was accentuated with cloud lights from Belux and surface-mounted spots from Linea light.
The reception area consists of a structured white surface in combination with wooden elements in walnut, reminiscent of the desks in the examination rooms.

Description:
From the beginning, it was important to the client that the public area of the surgery practice had a kind of Alpine chic character. Therefore, smoked oak floorboards were used as the flooring and stone cladding was used in the two waiting room areas.
Special feature:
As architects, we only had half a year to completely realize the surgical practice – from practice planning and furnishing to the opening.

Practice planning and implementation

Area
Approx. 326 m² ground floor administration
approx. 752 m² 1st floor clinic
Description:
The Swiss Central Clinic AG, formerly Euro-Polyclinic, is located not far from the Sihlcity shopping center in Zurich. To create a feeling of spaciousness, we as practice designers laid a light porcelain stoneware floor. The high-quality and playful wallpaper and striking lighting in the practice furnishings contrast with the plain floor. A micro-perforated metal ceiling was chosen for the ceiling. The reception is made of oak and Corian. The glazing in the waiting rooms can be pushed to the side and transforms the room into a large hall, for example for meetings or lectures.
Particularities:
The three operating rooms have walls made of solid core panels. To ensure that there are no cables and hoses on the floor that get in the way, we integrated all media gases and electrical connections into pendulums when we renovated the practice. The anesthesia cart is also connected to a pendulum. Various monitors were connected to pendulums and also integrated into the wall.

An emergency room was planned for a renowned clinic in the existing building and implemented during ongoing operations. Various departments also had to be relocated for this purpose.
